What exactly is a JDM engine or part?

JDM stands for Japanese Domestic Market. These are engines, transmissions, and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts that were originally built for and sold inside Japan — not exported to the United States. Japanese domestic regulations historically require vehicles to pass strict inspections every few years (known as Shaken), which incentivizes vehicle owners to retire their cars at relatively low mileage. This creates a reliable supply of low-mileage, well-maintained engines and drivetrain components.

JDM parts are not salvage yard pull-outs from U.S.-market vehicles. They come directly from Japan and are generally manufactured to higher or different specifications than the equivalent USDM (U.S. Domestic Market) engine. Displacement, compression ratios, and emissions tuning can differ from the U.S. version of the same engine family.

What types of products does JDM State Motors of NC sell?

We specialize in used JDM automotive components imported directly from Japan. Our inventory includes:

  • Complete JDM engines — replacement and performance engines for Honda/Acura, Toyota/Lexus, Nissan/Infiniti, Subaru, Mazda, and Mitsubishi vehicles
  • JDM transmissions — manual and automatic gearboxes, including differentials and transfer cases for all-wheel-drive applications
  • JDM front clips / nose cuts — complete front-end assemblies used for motor swaps or body conversion projects
  • OEM accessories and parts — steering components, suspension parts, interior and exterior trim, and other OEM components sourced from Japan

All items are sold in used condition unless a listing explicitly states otherwise. Inventory changes frequently — if you do not see a specific part listed, contact us at jdmstatemotorsofnc@gmail.com and we will check availability.

Are your engines and transmissions tested before they are listed?

Yes. Every engine that enters our facility undergoes a compression test and a detailed visual inspection before it is listed for sale. We check for external damage, oil leaks, coolant contamination, and overall physical condition. The results of these inspections are reflected in the product listing description and in the condition grade assigned to each unit.

Transmissions are visually inspected for casing damage, leaks, and physical integrity. While we do not road-test every individual transmission on a vehicle, we do not list units with obvious mechanical damage or signs of catastrophic failure.

Our inspection process is designed to give you an honest, accurate representation of what you are buying. If you have specific questions about a particular listing, contact us before purchasing and we will provide as much detail as available.

How accurate is the mileage listed on your engines and transmissions?

We disclose mileage based on documentation available from the Japanese exporter at the time of import. Japan uses kilometers, so mileage figures are converted from the odometer reading documented by the exporter. Where documentation is available and reliable, we list the mileage in the product description.

In cases where documentation is unavailable or the mileage cannot be independently verified, we note this clearly in the listing as "undocumented mileage" or "mileage unknown." We never inflate or fabricate mileage claims. Our inspection results — including compression test readings — are provided to help you assess the condition of the unit independently of the mileage figure.

Are the parts new, remanufactured, or used?

All products sold by JDM State Motors of NC LLC are used automotive components in used condition, unless a specific product listing explicitly states that the item is new. We do not sell remanufactured or reconditioned units unless that is clearly stated in the listing. Used means the part has been installed and operated in a vehicle previously. Despite being used, JDM engines and transmissions from Japan often have significantly lower mileage than equivalent U.S.-market used parts due to Japan's vehicle retirement cycle.

Do you sell parts for diesel vehicles?

Our inventory is primarily gasoline-powered JDM engines and components. We do not currently carry a standard inventory of diesel JDM engines. However, certain diesel units may become available from time to time depending on imports. Contact us at jdmstatemotorsofnc@gmail.com to ask about current availability for a specific diesel application.

Are you affiliated with Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Subaru, Mazda, or any other manufacturer?

No. JDM State Motors of NC LLC is not affiliated with, endorsed by, authorized by, or sponsored by any original equipment manufacturer (OEM), including Honda, Acura, Toyota, Lexus, Nissan, Infiniti, Subaru, Mazda, or Mitsubishi. All brand names, vehicle names, and engine codes used on our website are referenced solely to identify part compatibility — meaning the vehicle makes, models, and years that a given part is designed to fit. The use of these names does not imply any manufacturer relationship.

Ordering & Order Management
How do I place an order?

You can place your order directly on our website at www.jdmmotorsnc.com. Browse the product listings, select the item that fits your vehicle's year, make, model, and engine code, and add it to your cart. At checkout, enter your shipping address, select your payment method, and confirm your order. You will receive an order confirmation email within minutes of a successful payment.

If you are not sure which part fits your specific vehicle, contact us before purchasing at jdmstatemotorsofnc@gmail.com or +1 (919) 803-0095. Our team is glad to help you confirm compatibility before you commit.

What is your order cutoff time?

Our order cutoff time is 1:00 PM Eastern Time (ET), Monday through Friday. Orders placed before 1:00 PM ET on a business day enter processing the same day. Orders placed after 1:00 PM ET, or placed on Saturday, Sunday, or a federal U.S. holiday, are queued for processing on the next business day.

Business days are Monday through Friday, excluding all federal public holidays. Processing time is 1–2 business days from when your order enters the processing queue.

How long does order processing take?

Processing time is 1–2 business days after your order is confirmed and payment is verified. Processing includes inventory verification, quality check, secure packaging (crating or palletizing for engines and transmissions), and freight carrier handoff. Larger items such as complete engines and transmissions require more preparation time than smaller parts. Once your order has been dispatched, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking number.

Can I cancel my order after placing it?

Yes, cancellations are possible if your order has not yet been packed and dispatched. Contact us immediately at jdmstatemotorsofnc@gmail.com or call +1 (919) 803-0095 with your order number. Once an order has been assigned a tracking number and handed to the freight carrier, it can no longer be cancelled — in that case, a return may be initiated after delivery.

Full cancellation terms and refund timelines are available in our Cancellation Policy.

Can I modify my order after it has been placed?

Order modifications — such as changing the shipping address, switching to a different part, or adding items — may be possible if the order has not yet entered the packing stage. Contact us as quickly as possible at jdmstatemotorsofnc@gmail.com or +1 (919) 803-0095 referencing your order number. We will do our best to accommodate modifications before fulfillment begins, but we cannot guarantee changes once processing is underway.

How do I track my order?

Once your order is dispatched, you will receive a shipping confirmation email with your tracking number. You can track your shipment at any time using our Order Tracking page. For freight shipments, the carrier may also provide a separate freight tracking link or pro number. If you have not received a tracking number within 3 business days of placing your order, contact us at jdmstatemotorsofnc@gmail.com.

Do I need an account to place an order?

No. You can complete your purchase as a guest without creating an account. However, creating a free account on our Shopify store allows you to view your order history, save your shipping address for faster future checkouts, and track orders directly from your account dashboard. We recommend creating an account if you plan to make multiple purchases.

Shipping & Delivery
Where do you ship?

We ship to all 50 U.S. states, including Alaska and Hawaii. We do not ship internationally, and we do not fulfill orders to U.S. territories (Puerto Rico, Guam, U.S. Virgin Islands, etc.) or APO/FPO military addresses at this time. All orders must be delivered to a valid, physical U.S. street address. P.O. Box addresses are not accepted for freight-class shipments such as complete engines and transmissions.

How much does shipping cost?

We charge a flat shipping rate of $225.00 per order, regardless of destination within the 48 contiguous states. This flat rate covers standard freight handling, crating or palletizing (where required for engines and transmissions), and carrier pickup.

Shipments to Alaska and Hawaii may require an additional freight surcharge beyond the flat $225 rate due to the additional logistics involved. If a surcharge applies to your order, we will contact you before processing to confirm the adjusted total. You will always have the option to cancel if the total is not acceptable.

The full $225 shipping charge is displayed clearly at checkout before you enter any payment information.

How long does delivery take?

Estimated delivery time is 2–4 business days from the date your order is dispatched, Monday through Friday. This estimate applies to the 48 contiguous states and is based on typical freight carrier transit times. Delivery to Alaska, Hawaii, and remote rural addresses may take longer.

Keep in mind that your total wait time from order placement to delivery includes both processing time (1–2 business days) and transit time (2–4 business days), for a combined estimated total of 3–6 business days in most cases. These are estimates, not guaranteed dates. Carrier delays due to weather, holidays, or high freight volume can extend transit times beyond our control.

How are engines and transmissions shipped?

Complete engines and transmissions are heavy items that ship via LTL (Less Than Truckload) freight carriers. They are securely mounted to a pallet or placed inside a crate before dispatch to prevent damage during transit. Freight delivery is curbside — the carrier will deliver to the curb or end of the driveway. The driver is not responsible for carrying the item inside your garage or shop.

You or another adult must be present at the delivery address to sign for the freight and inspect it before signing. If a freight appointment is required by the carrier (common for residential deliveries), the carrier will call the phone number on your order to schedule a delivery window.

Smaller items such as accessories and OEM parts may ship via standard parcel carriers (UPS, FedEx) depending on size and weight.

What should I do if my shipment arrives damaged?

If you notice damage to the packaging or the item at the time of delivery, you must note the damage on the carrier's delivery receipt or Bill of Lading (BOL) before the driver leaves. Do not sign a clean receipt for a visibly damaged shipment — write "damaged" on the paperwork and describe what you see. Take photographs of the damage immediately.

Contact us within 48 hours of delivery at jdmstatemotorsofnc@gmail.com with your order number, photos of the damage, and a copy of the noted delivery receipt. We will file a freight claim on your behalf and work to resolve the issue promptly. Damage claims reported after 48 hours of delivery may be difficult to pursue with the freight carrier.

Our complete shipping terms are available in our Shipping Policy.

Do you offer expedited or express shipping?

We do not currently offer guaranteed expedited freight delivery for large items such as complete engines and transmissions — freight carriers set their own transit schedules and do not offer overnight options for pallet-class shipments. For smaller accessories and OEM parts that ship via parcel carrier, faster delivery options may be available at checkout if displayed. If you have an urgent timeline, contact us at jdmstatemotorsofnc@gmail.com before ordering and we will advise on realistic options.

Can I pick up my order in person?

Local pickup may be available at our facility at 1334 Bobbitt Dr., Garner, North Carolina 27529, by prior arrangement. Contact us at jdmstatemotorsofnc@gmail.com or +1 (919) 803-0095 to discuss pickup availability and scheduling before placing your order. Local pickup is subject to availability and must be arranged in advance — do not arrive without a confirmed appointment.

Returns & Refunds
What is your return policy?

We accept returns within 30 calendar days from the date of delivery. To be eligible for a return, the item must be in the same condition in which it was delivered — it must not have been installed, modified, or disassembled beyond what is necessary for an initial inspection. Items that have been installed in a vehicle are not eligible for return unless the part was found to be materially misrepresented in the listing.

To initiate a return, contact us at jdmstatemotorsofnc@gmail.com with your order number and a description of the reason for the return. Our team will review your request and provide return instructions. Do not ship items back without prior authorization.

Full terms, including exclusions, are detailed in our Refund Policy.

How long do refunds take?

Once a return is received and inspected by our team and the refund is approved, we issue the refund to your original payment method within 5–10 business days. The exact timing of when the credit appears on your account depends on your bank or payment provider's processing schedule. Visa, Mastercard, and American Express card refunds typically post within 5–10 business days of us initiating the refund. PayPal refunds typically appear in your PayPal balance within 3–5 business days.

If your refund has not appeared within 10 business days of our confirmation, please contact your bank first, then reach out to us at jdmstatemotorsofnc@gmail.com with your order number.

Who pays for return shipping?

For returns where the part was accurately described and you are returning it for personal reasons (change of mind, ordered wrong part, vehicle sold), the cost of return freight is the buyer's responsibility. Given that engines and transmissions ship as freight, return shipping costs are significant — we strongly encourage you to confirm compatibility before purchasing.

If the return is due to a material misrepresentation in our listing — meaning the item you received does not match what was described — we will cover the return freight and issue a full refund including the original shipping charge. Contact us first so we can arrange a return label or freight pickup in those cases.

Can I return a part that has already been installed?

Generally, no. Parts that have been installed in a vehicle are not eligible for return under our standard return policy, as installation changes the condition of the part. The only exception is if the installed part fails and is covered under warranty (see our warranty FAQ below), or if the listing materially misrepresented the part in a way that could not have been discovered before installation. In that case, contact us directly and we will review the situation on a case-by-case basis.

This is why we strongly recommend inspecting and verifying any part thoroughly before installation. If you have any doubts about the part you received before installing it, contact us first.

What if I ordered the wrong part?

If you ordered the wrong part, contact us within 30 calendar days of delivery to initiate a return. The item must not be installed or modified. Return freight in this case is the buyer's responsibility. Once we receive and inspect the returned item, we will issue a refund to your original payment method within 5–10 business days. You can then place a new order for the correct part.

To avoid ordering the wrong part, please verify your vehicle's year, make, model, engine code, and submodel before purchasing. Our team is available to assist with compatibility questions at jdmstatemotorsofnc@gmail.com or +1 (919) 803-0095.

Payment & Pricing
What payment methods do you accept?

We accept the following payment methods for all orders placed on www.jdmmotorsnc.com:

  • Visa — credit, debit, and prepaid Visa cards with a valid U.S. billing address
  • Mastercard — credit, debit, and prepaid Mastercard cards with a valid U.S. billing address
  • American Express — all Amex credit and charge card products with a valid U.S. billing address
  • PayPal — including PayPal balance, linked bank account, and PayPal Pay Later where eligible

We do not accept cash, checks, money orders, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, Venmo, Zelle, Cash App, or any other payment method outside of the above. Full payment details are available in our Payment Policy.

Are prices listed in U.S. Dollars?

Yes. All prices on our website are listed and charged in U.S. Dollars (USD). We do not accept foreign currency. If your card account is denominated in a foreign currency, your bank may apply a conversion rate and foreign transaction fee — those charges are outside our control and are set by your financial institution.

Do you charge sales tax?

Yes, where required by law. Following the U.S. Supreme Court's 2018 ruling in South Dakota v. Wayfair, Inc., online retailers can be required to collect and remit sales tax in states where they meet an economic nexus threshold, even without a physical presence. Sales tax is automatically calculated at checkout based on your shipping address using Shopify's tax engine.

States with no sales tax — including Oregon, Montana, New Hampshire, Delaware, and Alaska (no statewide tax) — will show $0 in tax at checkout. In all other states, the applicable rate is applied. If you are a licensed reseller purchasing for resale, contact us before placing your order to discuss tax exemption documentation.

Our home state of North Carolina (EIN: 93-4377095) applies state and applicable county-level sales tax to eligible orders shipped to NC addresses.

Are there any hidden fees?

No. The total shown at checkout — product price + flat $225 shipping + applicable sales tax — is exactly what you are charged. We do not add handling fees, credit card surcharges, payment processing fees, or any other charges after checkout. What you see at the order confirmation screen is what you pay.

Is it safe to enter my card information on your website?

Yes. Our checkout is powered by Shopify, which operates on a PCI DSS Level 1 certified payment infrastructure — the highest security standard for payment card processing. All data entered at checkout is encrypted via SSL/TLS (HTTPS). JDM State Motors of NC does not store your full card number or CVV code on our servers. Card tokenization is handled exclusively by Shopify's secure payment processor.

Always confirm that the address bar shows "https://" and a padlock icon before entering card details on any website.

My card was declined. What should I do?

Card declines are processed by your card issuer, not by us — we do not receive the specific reason for a decline. Common causes include: billing address mismatch (AVS failure), card not enabled for online purchases, daily spending limit reached, or your bank's fraud prevention blocking an unfamiliar merchant.

Steps to try: (1) Double-check that your billing address matches what your bank has on file exactly. (2) Contact your bank to confirm the card is enabled for card-not-present (online) transactions. (3) Try a different card. (4) Use PayPal as an alternative. If you continue to experience issues, contact us at jdmstatemotorsofnc@gmail.com and we will help troubleshoot.

Do you offer payment plans or financing?

We do not offer our own in-house payment plans, layaway, or deferred billing. PayPal Pay Later (installment options) may be available if your PayPal account qualifies — those plans are offered and managed by PayPal, not by JDM State Motors of NC. We receive full payment at the time of checkout regardless of which PayPal plan you select. Full payment details are in our Payment Policy.

Compatibility & Vehicle Fitment
How do I know if a JDM engine fits my vehicle?

Compatibility depends on your vehicle's year, make, model, engine code, and sometimes the specific submodel or trim level. JDM engines are generally physically compatible with their USDM counterparts in the same engine family, but there are differences — including sensors, wiring harness connectors, motor mounts, accessory brackets, and emissions equipment — that may require modification during installation.

Each product listing on our website includes a compatibility section specifying the years, makes, models, and engine codes the unit is designed for. Always cross-reference with your vehicle's VIN-decoded specifications. If you are unsure, contact us before purchasing at jdmstatemotorsofnc@gmail.com or +1 (919) 803-0095 — we are glad to help verify fitment.

What differences exist between JDM and USDM (U.S. market) versions of the same engine?

JDM and USDM versions of the same engine family can differ in several ways, including but not limited to:

  • Compression ratio — JDM engines are often tuned to run on higher octane Japanese pump fuel
  • Sensor types and positions — oxygen sensors, MAP sensors, and other emissions-related sensors may differ in count or connector type
  • Distributor vs. coil-on-plug configurations — ignition system layout can differ by model year
  • VTEC or VVT activation thresholds — ECU calibration differences affect how variable valve timing engages
  • Emissions systems — JDM engines are manufactured to Japanese emissions standards, which differ from U.S. EPA and CARB standards
  • Accessory bracket mounting — air conditioning, power steering, and alternator mounting points may differ between JDM and USDM blocks

These differences typically require some adaptation work during installation. A qualified JDM-experienced mechanic can assess what modifications are needed for your specific swap. We recommend consulting a professional installer before purchasing if you are not certain about the swap requirements.

Will a JDM engine pass emissions inspection in my state?

JDM State Motors of NC cannot guarantee that any JDM engine or part will pass emissions testing in any U.S. state. JDM engines are manufactured to Japanese domestic emissions standards, which are different from U.S. EPA standards and California Air Resources Board (CARB) standards.

States with emissions testing requirements include: California, New York, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Washington, Oregon, New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Colorado, Virginia, Vermont, Maine, Rhode Island, Minnesota, and Nevada, among others. Many of these states have adopted CARB standards. Texas has its own emissions inspection requirements that specify the replacement engine must meet the same model year or newer emissions standard as the original engine.

Before purchasing a JDM engine for an emissions-tested vehicle, consult your state's DMV, a licensed emissions inspector, or a qualified mechanic familiar with your state's rules. Buyers are solely responsible for ensuring that any purchased part complies with their local laws. See our Disclaimer for full details.

Do I need a professional mechanic to install a JDM engine or transmission?

We strongly recommend that JDM engines and transmissions be installed by a qualified, experienced automotive technician familiar with JDM engine swaps. Engine and transmission installations involve numerous interconnected systems — fuel, electrical, cooling, exhaust, and drivetrain — and errors during installation can result in vehicle damage, personal injury, or part failure that may void any applicable warranty.

JDM State Motors of NC does not cover labor costs, installation errors, or damage resulting from improper installation under any warranty or return claim. Buyer assumes full responsibility for the installation process and any outcome resulting from it.

Warranty
Do your products come with a warranty?

Select products sold by JDM State Motors of NC include a limited warranty as described in the individual product listing. Warranty terms — including duration and what is covered — vary by item and are stated explicitly in each listing. Not all products carry a warranty. If a listing does not state a warranty, the item is sold as-is with no warranty implied beyond what is required by applicable law.

Please read the product listing warranty section carefully before purchasing. If you have questions about the warranty terms for a specific item, contact us at jdmstatemotorsofnc@gmail.com before ordering.

What does the warranty cover?

Where a warranty applies, it covers the part itself against defects that were present at the time of sale and not disclosed in the listing. It does not cover:

  • Labor costs for installation, removal, or replacement
  • Damage caused by improper installation or misuse
  • Normal wear and tear
  • Damage resulting from running the engine without proper fluids, overheating, or other operator errors
  • Parts that were modified after purchase
  • Consequential or incidental damages, such as damage to other vehicle components caused by the part

Our warranty is a limited warranty on the part only. Full terms are available in our Terms of Service.

How do I make a warranty claim?

To initiate a warranty claim, contact us at jdmstatemotorsofnc@gmail.com with the following information: your order number, the part in question, a description of the problem, and any available supporting documentation (compression test results, mechanic's diagnosis, photos). We will review the claim and respond within 2 business days with next steps. Do not return parts without prior authorization.

U.S. State-Specific Rules
Can I legally install a JDM engine in California?

California has the strictest emissions enforcement in the United States, governed by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). California law generally requires that any replacement engine installed in a vehicle must meet CARB emissions standards equal to or stricter than those of the original engine. JDM engines are not CARB-certified and are manufactured to Japanese domestic specifications.

Installing an uncertified JDM engine in a California-registered vehicle subject to smog inspection will typically result in a smog check failure and could prevent vehicle registration. California also enforces these rules through the Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR). Buyers in California should consult a CARB referee station or a licensed smog technician before purchasing a JDM engine for a street-driven, smog-tested vehicle.

JDM State Motors of NC sells to California residents for off-road, track, or collector vehicle use only, where the vehicle is exempt from California smog inspection. The buyer is solely responsible for compliance with California law.

What are the rules in Texas for replacing an engine with a JDM unit?

Texas requires that replacement engines in vehicles subject to emissions testing meet the same model year or newer emissions standard as the original engine. Texas emissions testing applies to most counties in the Dallas–Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and El Paso metro areas. Vehicles in these counties with a replacement engine must have the engine code and year documented and the replacement must comply with the applicable standard.

Many rural Texas counties do not require emissions testing. Buyers in Texas should check whether their county requires emissions testing and whether a JDM engine swap would comply before purchasing. The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) are the relevant state agencies.

Do other CARB-adopted states have similar restrictions to California?

Yes. The following states have adopted California's CARB emissions standards (the "Section 177 states") and enforce similar or identical smog and emissions requirements: Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington. Colorado and Minnesota have also adopted stricter emissions rules aligned with CARB standards.

In these states, the same concerns about JDM engine compliance with smog testing apply as in California, though enforcement and inspection procedures vary by state. Buyers in any of these states should consult their state's DMV or an emissions inspector before purchasing a JDM engine for a vehicle that will be subject to state emissions testing.

Are there states where JDM engine swaps are generally easier to register?

States that do not have mandatory vehicle emissions testing generally impose fewer restrictions on engine replacements. These include states such as Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona (most counties), Florida, Georgia (most counties), Idaho, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming, among others.

However, even in non-testing states, other laws may apply — such as VIN verification requirements, title transfer rules for rebuilt vehicles, or county-level rules. JDM State Motors of NC recommends that all buyers consult their local DMV or a qualified mechanic before completing any engine swap, regardless of state. We are not attorneys and this information is provided as general guidance, not legal advice.

Does JDM State Motors of NC comply with North Carolina used parts dealer laws?

Yes. JDM State Motors of NC LLC is a registered North Carolina limited liability company (EIN: 93-4377095) operating in compliance with applicable North Carolina statutes governing the sale of used automotive parts. We accurately disclose the condition and origin of all parts sold, as required by North Carolina law and applicable federal consumer protection regulations enforced by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). All product listings reflect the actual condition of items at the time of sale.
